COLOMBIA

Ballet Raices de Colombia

Founded in 2001, The Ballet Raices de Colombia (BRDC) is an artistic and cultural nonprofit organization working for the enhancement of multiculturalism in Canada through the Colombian folklore. Our media involve dance, music and all other artistic expression that guarantees a high quality show and an unforgettable experience. With a touch of classical and modern ballet, BRDC illustrates one of the richest folklores in the world thanks to the mixture of Pre-Columbian, Spanish and African cultures.

The founder and choreographer Carlos Reyes always had the objective of promoting the Colombian folklore not only among Colombians living in Canada, but also among all those who show interest in Colombian culture, music and dances. We have participated in internationally renowned events such as the International Performing Arts Festival, Worldfest 2016, in Mumbai, the Montreal Salsa Congress and the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015, thus actively contributing to the cultural dynamics of Montreal. Winner of the 2012 competition at the Longueil International Percussion Festival, the BRDC has been a part of various festivals programming since its inception. Festivals such as the Mondial des cultures in Drummondville, the Festival of Traditions du Monde in Sherbrooke and Just for Laughs are some festivals where the troupe has seduced the public thanks to its professionalism and staging.

HUNGARY

Our village, Üllés, is situated in the South-Eastern part of Hungary, called the Great Plain.

This region is famous for its wine and pepper. Üllés has 3200 inhabitants.

The Folkdance Ensemble FONÓ Üllés was founded in 1977 by the local elementary school, the Déryné Cultural Center and the local ÁFÉSZ ( General Cooperative of Consumes and Sale ).

The members are students and young workers who undertake to keep the dance traditions and folkways of their homeland.
Our performance shows an authentic view of the dances of the Carpathian Basin and the hungarian folklore. We pay great attention to representing the original dances in original costumes, which were sewed by the dancers themselves. As a recognition of professional
work, the ensemble have won many prizes so far. ( “Eminent Ensemble”, the “Best Ensemble Award”, Csongrád County Creative Award, Prima award 2018). We are constant attenders of local and international festivals and have already visited almost every country in Europe (Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, England, Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Germany, Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Russia, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Poland).

The ensemble puts a lot of effort into the education of the next generations. At the art school the pupils get to know the different types of traditional children’s games, folk songs and the easier steps during their early schoolyears and become „native speakers” of hungarian folkdance. By this time we have 120 members in 4 different groups, based on age.

The ensemble has two orchestras a youth and an adult one. Performances are accompanied by them but they have their own programmes too.

Our programme:

  • Dances from Dél-Alföld ( South-east part of Hungary. This is our region, our homeland)
  • Dances from Szatmár ( North-east part of Hungary)
  • Dances from Kiskunság (South-east part of Hungary)
  • Dances from Désfalva ( Hungarian gipsy dances from Transylvania)
  • Dances from Palatka and Feketelak (Hungarian dances from Transylvania)
  • Dances from Kalotaszeg (Hungarian dances from Transylvania)
